Would you like to join the Children's Heart Society?Childrens Heart Society is a charitable organization, made up of parents and extended families of children who have acquired or congenital heart disease. We are joined by others who have chosen to provide support to our families: professionals who work in the medical field and others who have a strong commitment to volunteer wherever they can to build a stronger community.Memberships to Children's Heart Society are provided with a small fee and include a subscription to our quarterly newsletter and entry to our family events such as the Christmas Party or May Campout and activities for specific age groups. A volunteer contribution is requested either in time or funds, otherwise members are more than welcome to join us but are asked to cover their own costs.Memberships are $30 per year, per family and renewed each February. However, if the fee is a financial burden to your family, please let us know, as you will not be denied services. The costs of running our society are covered through our own fundraising activities.Membership introduces you, over time, to a network of relationships with people who can understand the unique experiences of raising a child with special heart needs. If you would like to join you can mail, fax or email back the membership form. If you want to know more, please contact us.

About Us

The CHS is a grassroots, non-profit, charitable organization committed to providing support, education, research and awareness for those children affected with congenital and acquired heart disease.

The BackgroundHeart disease in children is the most common birth defect - occurring in one in every 100 births. In comparison: neural tube defects occur one in 1000 births, orofacial clefts affect one in 700 to 1000 births. The most frequent cause of infant deaths is due to congenital heart abnormalities. Heart disease in children does not discriminate; it can happen to a child of any nationality or socio-economic background. Because heart disease, unlike cancer, is a hidden illness, the general public is unaware that children do suffer from what most of us believe to be an adult illness. The ImpactThe Childrens Heart Society impacts the community in three ways. We provide direct support to children and their families struggling with heart disease through a variety of programs. We also promote general awareness of this condition and try to educate the public of its existence and the need for more research and improved medical interventions so that no child will die from heart disease. Lastly we fundraise to support both our own programs and the Pediatric Cardiology program at the Stollery Childrens Hospital. We provide the hospital with research grants, new equipment, programming funds, supplies, toys and time.

History and Goals

The HistoryThe Children's Heart Society was founded by concerned parents in Edmonton, Alberta whose children had been diagnosed with heart defects. They recognized the need for a support group for families who were living with congenital heart disease. The CHS has been in operation since 1982 and in this time the CHS has helped thousands of children and families. For the past 29 years we have managed to raise almost a half million dollars for research and hospital equipment for the Pediatric Cardiology Program and related services at the Stollery Childrens Hospital.Our VisionA world in which children with heart disease and their families achieve an optimal quality of life.Our Goals•To work towards the day when no child will die from heart disease•To ensure the best possible care for children suffering from heart disease•To improve the quality of life for children and families living with heart disease•To educate the public about heart disease in children and their many needs

We are currently running weekly Yoga classes for parents at the hospital as well hosting monthly pizza days and coffee hours. Please check with Child Life to find out times and locations within the hospital.

Little Zippers

A group for the infant to preschool aged children and parents. Our preschool group has begun. Please contact the office if you would like to learn more about our "little zippers". Our first event was a playdate at Cafe O'Play. Please email the office to make sure your name is included on the Little Zippers emails.

Heart Hero Cameron

I would like to introduce myself, my name is Cameron but my Uncle calls me Champ. My Mom and Dad are named Seanne and Asa and I have two sisters named Olivia and Addison ages six and three. I love my swing, rolling in my crib, the color blue, the show Barney, but most of all I love my family. Some of my favourite activities are going to the Farmers Market with my Dad, hanging out with my Papa, getting my picture taken by my Auntie, watching my Sisters dance hip-hop and jazz, sitting in the sunshine with Nana, Getting a bath from my Grandma, swapping heart stories with my Grandpa and navigating our local corn maze with my Mom. Oh and learning anatomy from my 21 month old Cousin Charles.Like anyone I can get annoyed from time to time, but generally speaking I think I havequite a tolerable personality and can put up with most anything. However, over the last9 months I have developed a few pet peeves. Number one on my list is definitelyteething; I also really dislike open-heart surgeries, MRSA and acid reflux.Although I am a very busy person who has weekly appointments with many worldrenowned professionals, like doctors and surgeons, I still find time to volunteer. I wasrecently out at a hot dog sale in Beaumont raising money for the Childrens HeartSociety. Kathryn's Heart Journey

Y2K had much hype surrounding the potential technological bugs that people around the world were stocking up on supplies and buying generators in the event something bad was going to happen. My wife Maggie and I were however more focused on the birth of our third child and what an amazing year to be born in. Named after her Great Grandmother, Kathryn or more commonly know as Kate or Katie was a full term baby with no indication of any problems prior to or on her June birthday. Truly blessed as parents because of Kate her two older siblings Kelly, Marshall and last but far from least Rebecca-Rae. It was not until the May of 2002 that Kate became very ill. She was vomiting even when there was nothing left to vomit and running dangerously high fevers that wouldnt respond to regular or even double doses of your typical fever reducers. After already being seen and discharged from the Grey Nuns hospital It was not long before we took Kate to the Stollery Children's Hospital. There she was admitted and was soon undergoing various common tests as her condition worsened. When the results came back the Dr diagnosed her with the very rare Kawasakis disease. Kawasaki disease can cause inflammation of blood vessels in the arteries, especially the coronary arteries and this inflammation can lead to aneurysms. Terrified and shocked young parents of three we could not believe our ears. Without delay Kate underwent an echocardiogram and ultrasound tests to see if her heart was experiencing these further symptoms associated with the diagnoses. The Drs soon met with us and wasted no time in telling us that there was swelling around her heart then proceeded to ask us if we had ever been told of any irregularities with Kates heart to which we answered no whats the matter with our baby girl? The Dr then proceeded to tell us that in addition to the swelling they found a large hole in her heart approximately the size of the end of his thumb. We couldnt believe what we were hearing, how can this be? We later tried to rationalize why this wasnt caught earlier after all she never missed a check-up with her pediatrician who would listen to her heart at every visit. He proceeded to tell us that likely because the hole in her heart was so large that it did not make the typical sounds associated holes in the heart. The many Drs who had listened to her heart upon being admitted now knowing the results of the latest tests listened again but this time taking a more engaged listen to the heart sounds being made by this 16 pound 23 month old girl. With an increased awareness all that listened before could now heard the sounds of blood bypassing back from the left to right Atrium. I struggle to this day why that same level of attentive listening had escaped every single medical professional up to that point. I can not help but wonder what unseen effects this had on her during the critical first couple years of her life.The diagnoses for Kate was an Arterial sepital defect and a Patent ductus arteriosus defect. Both are considered simple Congenital Heart Defects at least from a medical point of view. From a parents point of view I can tell you that this was the scariest time of our lives. At the impressionable age of 2 1/2 I cant imagine what thoughts were running through Kates head as we did our very best to remain strong in her presence despite the frequent Doctor visits leading up to her surgery. After a course of intravenous gamma globulin Kate started showing signs of improvement and our first of many week long stays at the hospital came to an end. It was not long and we were back at the Stollery for frequent follow up tests. We were referred to a two cardiologists to discuss the two possible corrective measures for these defects. The first being open heart surgery and the second was the new procedure of installing a Helex Sepital Occluder by way of cardiac catheterization. This new procedure had only been completed twice before on pediatric patents with the youngest being more then twice as old as Kate. When we met with Dr. Coe to discuss the new treatment there was some specific challenges because of the location of the hole. These challenges left Kate with the strong possibility of repeat procedures or all together complete failure of the procedure. This together with no long or mid term evidence of it's success left us with a choice we didnt want to face. Unfortunately we would soon discover we would not have the time to wait and nobody knew for sure what effects the ASD had already had on Kate. In a crude (male) sort of way going with the device was like buying a first year model of a new vehicle. Typically problems are found and recalls for fixes are needed. We felt that Kate deserved better odds then going with an unproven device and as such we made the toughest decision of our lives to date and to go with the open heart surgery. Before this could happen however Kate would need some time to gain some strength and weight back before they would even consider the surgery.On a now routine visit to the peds cardiac unit in December 2002 the ECG had revealed signs of increased swelling on the right side of Kate's heart. Dr Dick was quick to come in to the room to consult with us and proceeded to ask us "so what are your plans for Christmas"? Christmas was only a couple weeks away and our only Christmas wish was for Kate to be healthy and to hopefully put this really bad dream behind us. A few days later the date of December 24th was confirmed for her open heart surgery. The next toughest thing I've ever done in my life was to enter the operating room and the surgical team putting my angel to sleep in my arms in preparation for the surgery. I don't wish this experience on anyone but at the same time given the situation I wouldn't allowed myself to have been anywhere else. I remember finally breaking down just outside the O.R. and asking the nurse who escorted me out to take care of my girl in a sternest way as I could put together. Christmas eve between 7:30am and 11:45am pediatric surgeon Dr Rebeyka corrected the ASD & PDA. You often hear how quickly kids rebound from surgeries and illness because of there strength and resilience. In true form Kate was home a week post operation and getting stronger by the day. The hospital staff did an amazing job over this period to try to ensure Kate had some positive experiences during this time. Maggie and I will never forget that Dr. Rebeyka came in on Christmas day with his family to follow up with us and give Kate a stuffed animal.Christmas has extra special meaning for us and we pause and remember as a family what we all went through with Kate every Christmas. I wish I could say that was the one and only extended hospital visit but Kate has been back to the Stollery for other non- heart related issues and countless illnesses that have kept her from school. At almost 11 years old we believe that Kate is gaining some momentum and is showing amazing strength despite some of her ongoing challenges. Kate loves being with her family and friends and enjoys outdoor activities, fashion design, reading, pets care and has recently learned to downhill ski and is going into her second year as a fastball pitcher. Madison

Madison's Story

Madison was born on August 30th, 1994. She had a planned delivery for the beginning of the week because I had found out 10 days before my due date that something was terribly wrong with my baby's heart. An ultrasound showed that her heart was on the wrong side and we had to go to the University of Alberta Hospital to have a fetal echocardiogram. This showed that one side of her heart was very underdeveloped and they could only see 1 of the greater vessels (which they hoped was the aorta). She was so big and already in position that we had to wait until she was born to find out the whole picture. So we had a planned delivery and she was 8lbs 10oz. That was the 1st and only time that Madison was at the top of the growth chart or should I say actually on the chart.We discovered that she had right-sided hypoplastic left ventricle, double outlet right ventricle, dextrocardia, total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, sub-pulmonary stenosis and mirror image branching. Because her heart was on the right side then everything else shifted. She had a mid-line liver and there was no room for a spleen so she is asplenic.She went to NICU right away and started crashing fairly early and had to be intubated until they could figure out exactly what they were dealing with. People couldn't understand why this big baby was in the NICU in amongst all the preemies. She was there for 2 weeks and I had her home for 1 week and then we returned to hospital. Her oxygen saturations were about 45% so she had surgery at 4 weeks of age. This was the BT shunt. Her oxygen levels went up to about 76%. Because Madison had no spleen she was more susceptible to certain infections like Strep, Meningitis and Pneumonia. She is on Penicillin for life to protect her. Her little body was working so hard just to function that she seemed to come down with lots of respiratory infections and we were in hospital every couple of months for a 10-14 day stay. She got RSV, Pneumonia and Bronchiolitis and needed to be in hospital usually for chest physio and oxygen to get her back on her feet.Madison was very tiny. She was about 18 lbs at 18 months of age. We weren't sure if we were ever going to be able to turn her carseat around because of her weight. At about 18 months she underwent her 2nd surgery which was the Glenn Shunt. We had a Dr. from Saudi Arabia. They called him Dr. Desert Storm because he flew in, did surgery on about 20 kids and flew back out again. Madison came through this surgery very well and her saturations were about 85%.Her 3rd surgery was the Fontan and she was just over 3 years of age. This surgery was very hard on Madison because of her unique heart and we thought we were going to lose her at one point. She spent 3 weeks in the PICU and we got out just before Christmas. Madison had a stroke and had to learn to walk again. She was then saturating in the low 90s. Amazingly she bounced back fairly quickly. We noticed that now having had the 3 surgeries that she wasnt getting sick as often and really didnt need to be hospitalized anymore for upper respiratory infections like before.Madison is now 16 and is a beautiful girl, although still tiny. She just hit 5 feet and only weighs about 90lbs. She has had some struggles in school and we wonder if it was due to the stroke but after being on bypass 3 times, Im sure there were lots of blips andbubbles that went through that little brain. We look back now and realize that she probably spent about 1 year total in hospital and possibly that is why she is behind. She just started Grade 10 in a Try10 program and has a good circle of friends. Madison is on several medications to keep things in check and her oxygen saturations have been slowly dropping so they're monitoring her closely. Madison now has 2 brothers that are healthy and drive her nuts. They are 9 and 7.5 years old.We joined the Childrens Heart Society shortly after Madison was born and have found constant support and friendship throughout Madisons journey. We have hopefully been able to provide some comfort and relief to other families that have children with similar hearts to Maddys.

Atticus

Atticus' Story

Our beautiful baby girl, Jordan, was born on April 4th 2003. On Friday, April 8th 2005, our little boy Atticus was born. We were ecstatic; we had our perfect little family. A slight heart murmur had been detected, but we were reassured that 90% of babies have this. We were told to go home and to follow up with a pediatrician on Monday morning, 3 days later. In the wee hours of Monday morning, we took Atticus to the Stollery because his temperature had dropped. The nurse at the admitting desk looked at Atticus, grabbed him and immediately ran yelling "we have a CA". All I remember is trying to keep up with her while turning to my husband and inquiring "What does a CA mean?". Little did we know that our lives would be changed forever.Unbeknownst to us, Atticus was in cardiac arrest. All of a sudden we were in a room filled with doctors and nurses who were desperately working to save our son's life. And they accomplished it. It is due to their hard work that our little man is here today.Atticus has Hypo Plastic Left Heart Syndrome. The left side of his heart did not develop, leaving him with only ½ a heart. Due to not being pre-diagnosed, his body experienced major insults. We were advised that his liver, kidney, and brain had been too damaged and that he would not be a candidate for surgery. They were going to give him one week and then advised us that we would more then likely have to go with compassionate care and say our goodbyes. To everyones astonishment, his body made enough of a recovery and his first open heart surgery was done at just 2 week old, his 2nd open heart surgery to follow at 6 months of age. In between the two surgeries, we were treated for liver failure, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and heart failure. After our final discharge from 2nd stage we were able to keep him home for an extended period of time, he was 8 ½ months old.At 2.5 years of age we brought him back for his 3rd and final open heart surgery. Post surgery, and two weeks stabilizing in PICU he was finally declared strong enough to move to the cardiac ward. We just had to wait for a bed to become available for him. On the 3rd day of waiting, the unthinkable occurred. Atticus got a blood infection. In his compromised condition, he weakened very quickly and had to go back on the breathing machine, being too weak to breath on his own. Within a week he became septic from the infection and the outcome looked dyer. We were informed that they did not think he was going to make it. As a last resort the surgeons came in at 1am on Sunday to put him on ECMO, a heart and lung by-pass machine. We were advised that due to the large amount of blood thinner that is required for this procedure, Atticus would more then likely get a bleed in the brain and we would lose him. They estimated that we only had 10 hours left with him. To everyone's amazement he stabilized and was able to come off of ECMO the week before Christmas; what a special gift this was. However, Atticus' poor little heart and lungs had taken too many insults and he was not strong enough to come off of the breathing machine. He remained on it until he got his new heart on January 24th 2008, our 120th day in PICU. We were truly blessed. Post transplant we spent an additional month in PICU until he had built up enough strength to breath on his own. We then spent the following month on the cardiac ward, finally being discharged shortly after Easter.Our brave little man is now 4 years old. He has spent over 1.5 of those years living at the Stollery. We have witnessed first hand the commitment and dedication that the Stollery team provides to its patients. It is because of this outstanding facility that we are able to watch our little Hero grow up. It is due to many generous donations that such an establishment exists. We have had the pleasure of experiencing a Stollery miracle first hand.Through us sharing Atticus' story may you know how many lives are touched when one life is saved. It is due to your hard work and commitment that such a wonderful organization exists.

We held our Annual Family Christmas Party November 26th. It was exciting to see so many new faces and families joining us and catch up with old heart friends as well. We had a family from the Ronald McDonald house make it and we had some families travel over 2 hours to attend! We were able to donate a portion of our catered meal to the families at the Ronald McDonald House that were not able to join us for this evening.We were able to honour our special volunteers the Sherwood Park Elks and our Bingo Angels for coming out and supporting the Children's Heart Society throughout the year. We had wonderful volunteers from University of Alberta Circle K helping the kids with crafts and fun. They are so appreciated! We thank all the volunteers and members that contributed to putting on this annual event. We held the Annual General Meeting in which we elected the board for this upcoming year. We are saddened to see some of our wonderful board stepping down this year. Susan North has been our president and in various board positions for many years and her talents and time will be greatly missed! Kurt Schreiner, our secretary and Barb Gaunt, director have both also stepped down. We have benefited from your commitment to CHS and will miss you terribly as we go forward.

Excellent time camping this weekend out at Ol' MacDonald's Resort by Stettler. The weather was great. I definitely got tooo much sun on Sunday. The kids made crafts, decorated t-shirts, teen cooking, sandcastle building, baseball, movie night and more. Make sure to mark your calendars for next May Long Weekend. There is so much for the kids to do out there. We had families from Medicine Hat, Rocky Mountain House and Stettler join us. The children made some wonderful friendships. Pictures to follow!!!THANK YOUBUTCHERS CORNER in Beaumont donated the meat for our BBQ also SOBEY's in Beaumont gave a $50 gift card for buns, etc. Let's all give a shout out to these wonderful businesses. Maggie got a wonderful donation of potted plants for our kids to use with crafting flower pots. An Affair of the Heart Gala

A huge thank you to the Medicine Class of 2014 for hosting the An Affair of the Heart Gala for the Children's Heart Society!

It was an amazing evening! We had many of our special heart children participate in the gala. Kathryn Courchene was a key speaker and did an amazing job sharing her story. Jessica Krieger did a wonderful job playing her guitar and singing for the attendees. Marleina Schreiner, Kaylee Row and Maya Moroz strutted their stuff for the fashion show.

Over $12, 000 was raised on this evening through all the hard work and effort made by the Faculty of Medicine

& Dentistry at the University of Alberta, Class of 2014. Thank you for choosing the Children's Heart Society as your charity of choice!!

Volunteer Opportunities

We are often looking for volunteers to help in a number of ways. Some of the roles include helping to put comfort bags together, lending a hand at a fundraising barbeque, helping with organizing events, bingos and casinos among many others.
